How to Get to Gaztelugatxe from Bilbao

Gaztelugatxe sits on the Bizkaia coast between Bakio and Bermeo, roughly an hour from Bilbao by road. There are three ways to do it and they are not close to equivalent.

Driving

The fastest and the most flexible — and the one with the failure mode.

The road out through Mungia and Bakio is straightforward and scenic, and the drive takes about an hour. The problem is the other end: the car park serving Gaztelugatxe is not large, it is the only one, and on a summer weekend it fills early. People end up parked along the roadside a long walk away, which turns a 1.1km approach into something considerably longer before the 241 steps even start.

If you drive: go early, ideally arriving before mid-morning, and have your free timed permit already booked. Both problems solve themselves outside July and August.

Public transport

Possible, and genuinely awkward.

Bizkaibus runs from Bilbao toward Bakio and Bermeo, and the stop nearest Gaztelugatxe leaves you on the main road with a walk to the site entrance — before the walk down to the causeway and the steps.

The real issue is not the walking, it is the timetable. Services are infrequent enough that you end up planning the day around the return bus rather than around the site, and a missed connection on a coastal road in the evening is not a minor inconvenience.

It is doable for a confident, unhurried traveller with a whole day and no fixed plans. For most visitors it is the option that looks reasonable on paper and disappoints in practice. Check current Bizkaibus timetables directly — we are deliberately not quoting route numbers or times, because those change and a stale one here would strand someone.

Taxi

Expensive in both directions, and you have to arrange the return in advance — you will not find one waiting at the headland. It solves the flexibility problem and creates a cost one.

The guided day trip

This is why the market exists, and it is worth being clear about what it does and does not buy.

It buys: the hour each way from central Bilbao, a guide, no parking problem, and — on the featured trip — the necessary tickets and entry fees, so the timed access permit is handled. Around $81.

It also buys two other stops, because these are full-day tours: usually Bermeo, a working fishing harbour, and Gernika. Some versions swap in Mundaka or add a wine stop.

It does not buy speed. If Gaztelugatxe is the only thing you want and you have a car, driving yourself and leaving is faster. The day trip suits people without a car, and people who would rather see three places than one.

Which to pick

Car, staying nearby, going outside peak: drive. Book the free permit, leave early, done.

Car, August weekend: drive but arrive properly early, or take the tour and let someone else deal with the car park.

No car: the day trip, almost every time. This is the honest answer and it is the reason this site exists.

No car and a strong preference for doing it alone: Bizkaibus, a full free day, and a careful look at the return timetable before you commit.

One planning note

Whichever way you go, the free timed permit is a separate thing from your transport, unless the tour includes it. Check the tickets guide — it takes two minutes and it is the difference between climbing the steps and looking at them.
