Do You Need a Ticket for Gaztelugatxe?

There is no ticket, and there is no ticket price. Entry to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is free, and has stayed free through the whole period it became famous.

What you may need is a permit — a free, timed access slot — and it is issued by the Bizkaia provincial council through its own booking portal. It costs nothing. If anyone quotes you a price for entry, they are selling transport or a guided tour, which is a different product entirely.

Why the permit exists

Gaztelugatxe is a narrow causeway and a staircase on a headland. There is a physical limit to how many people can be on it safely at once, and after the Game of Thrones effect the site started receiving far more visitors than the access route was built for.

The council’s answer was a daily cap with free timed slots rather than a charge. That is worth appreciating: they could easily have monetised it and chose not to.

When you need one

Peak summer: every day. The rest of the year: weekends and public holidays. Outside those windows you can generally turn up.

The exact calendar is published on the reservation portal itself and it moves year to year, so check it rather than trusting any blog — including this one — for the current dates. The portal is the same place you book, so it is one visit rather than two.

How to book it yourself

It takes about two minutes.

1. Go to the Bizkaia council’s Gaztelugatxe reservation portal.
2. Pick your date and an available time slot.
3. Enter your details and confirm.
4. Keep the confirmation on your phone.

That is the whole process, and there is no payment step because there is nothing to pay.

Book early for summer weekends. The cap is real and popular slots go. If your date is fixed, reserve as soon as the calendar opens for it.

When the tour handles it instead

This is the part worth checking before you book anything.

The featured day trip from Bilbao lists “necessary tickets and entry fees” in its inclusions, which means the timed slot is arranged for you. You book the tour and turn up.

Not every Gaztelugatxe tour does this. Some drive you to the headland and assume you arranged your own free permit. That is an entirely honest product — it is cheaper for the operator and it suits people who have already booked — but it becomes a problem if nobody mentioned it and you arrive on a capped day without a slot.

So: read the inclusions, not the price. It is one line in the listing and it is the difference between walking up and being turned back.

What actually costs money

Getting there. The site is about an hour from Bilbao by road, the car park fills in summer, and public transport does not make a comfortable day of it. That is the real expense and the real reason the day-trip market exists — around $81 for transport, a guide and, on the featured trip, the entry fees.

Nothing at the top. There is no café, no shop and no entry booth at the hermitage. Bring water.

The one thing to be sceptical about

If a page offers to sell you “Gaztelugatxe tickets” at a price without making clear that entry is free and it is selling you a tour, treat that as a signal about the page rather than about Gaztelugatxe.
